Which type of drum head is best for playing Metal?

Yeah Evans Hydraulic heads sound like crap, unless you enjoy the sound of cardboard boxes. For what you're describing I'd recommend the Evans G2 for batter and Evans Genera Resonant on the bottom. I would not use a heavy 2 ply head like the G2 on my snare, but that's your call. Nothing sounds worse than an over-dampened snare drum. I always use single ply heads on the snare drum, top and bottom.
