How can I ship large items from the United States to New Zealand?

I am looking at getting a dog bed from Orvis in the States as you can't buy anything decent in NZ and could potentially ship to a friend in Boulder Colorado as they won't ship overseas... but then how to get to NZ? I looked up UPS and did an estimate on their website and it came out at $811 to ship!! That's insane - there must be another way?
