Should i tell my friend sooner or later about my upcoming engagement ?

i think you should tell him after he recover so he may understand you and i think he has the right to know because apart of it his your friend and its very sad that he has no parents any more but.. tell him and make him understand that this is life,, and anmybody should leave then there would be a new person who will just come into his life.. tell him so he could move on.
