Looking for a pet dog, need some advice?

I am looking for a dog as a PET ONLY. I don't really care about pure breeds... this dog will be sleeping in my bed with my wife and I and maybe someday our son or daughter. I want a small to medium sized dog preferable short hair or a long hair that doesn't shed much. I do plan on having kids so what ever breed it is it MUST be good with kids. I hear Mastiffs are great with kids but are a bit bigger then I want haha. Again this will be an inside dog and the wife absolutely doesn't want a dog that sheds a lot! Also just to make animal lovers feel better I do have a yard
