For those against abortion, why aren't you concentrating instead on adoption?

In 1999 (latest data I could find) there were 510,000 children up for adoption in America, yet only 49,000 adopted. So instead of bickering about abortion, why aren't you instead doing something about adoption? Seems to me that abortion is the only way to control so many children being family-less, unloved and homeless.
